About Dalwood Village
Dalwood, a beautiful East Devon Village of about 400 residents, is situated at the southern end of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty known as the Blackdown Hills. The population is made up of families with generations of local connections and newcomers who have integrated well and brought much to the village. There is a very strong community spirit as demonstrated by the number of organisations and also the range of events put on each year, most of which raise funds for numerous charities.
St Peter’s Church
The Church is at the centre of the village. The programme of Sunday services moves between 11.00am and 9.30am, most being clergy led but some lay-led. There are also joint services with the other 4 churches in the Mission Community. Activities for both the Church and the village are guided by Worship teams, a pastoral team and social and fabric committees. A monthly Community Lunch is held in the Village Hall and other events include house groups, coffee mornings, a flower festival and garden parties. The PCC meets 4 times a year. Church finances are well managed with a good reserve.
Unfortunately our primary school closed in 2011 due to falling numbers. However, a Recreation Trust has been set up and has purchased the school field and a pavilion building for community use. The Old School building is now operating as a Nursery with some 70 children enrolled.
Community Shop
Staffed entirely by volunteers, the community shop has been running for about 14 years as a non-profit making Friendly Society. The shop also boasts a small post office and these two facilities have become a central meeting point and information centre.
The Tuckers Arms
This local pub was built in the 14th Century to accommodate the various craftsmen who built the church. It is now an important place where people meet to socialise or play in various skittles teams. It has also been used for Church events like Lent courses and discussion suppers.
